Draft Environmental Assessment

Draft Environmental Assessment Available for Review

Walker is inviting the community to review and provide feedback on the Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the proposed continuation of the South Landfill.

The proposed continuation of the South Landfill would allow Walker to continue providing safe, reliable, and affordable waste disposal services for Niagara the surrounding communities, support more than 500 local jobs, and continue producing renewable energy from landfill gas.

What is a Draft Environmental Assessment?

An Environmental Assessment (EA) is a comprehensive planning process used to evaluate the potential environmental, social, and economic effects of a proposed project before any decisions are made.

The Draft EA represents several years of technical studies, environmental analysis, engineering, planning and consultation with government agencies, Indigenous communities, stakeholders and members of the public.

The assessment examines potential impacts on areas such as air quality, water, traffic, noise, natural heritage, and surrounding communities. It also identifies measures to mitigate, minimize, and manage potential effects.

The findings of the Draft EA indicate that the proposed continuation can be developed in a manner that protects the environment, supports community well-being and helps meet the region’s long-term waste management needs.

Your Feedback Matters!

Community input is an important part of the Environmental Assessment process. Your input will help inform the final Environmental Assessment before it is submitted to the provincial government for review.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about the proposed continuation of the South Landfill and participating in the Environmental Assessment process.

We encourage everyone with an interest in the project to review the Draft Environmental Assessment and learn more about the studies, findings and proposed mitigation measures.

The Draft EA is available for public review from July 8 to August 24, 2026.
